Symantec has released its latest Internet Security Threat Report, noting that the nature of malicious attacks are changing, shifting to the web-layer and targeting individuals, not platforms or operating systems.

In the second half of 2007, Symantec documented 239 browser plug-in vulnerabilities compared to 237 during the first six months of the year. As attacks move toward the web layer, threats become about targeting people and their information, not a particular operating system or type of computer.

The researchers also noted that social networking sites accounted for 91 per cent of phished brands hosted in the U. in the last half of 2007. Also, in the last six months of 2007 Symantec detected 499,811 new malicious code threats; a 136 per cent increase over the previous period.
