Tesco has announced it has launched an international calling card, promising to provide customers with low cost international calls from the UK.

The supermarket giant has trialled Tesco Calling Cards in 1,000 Metro and Express Stores across the country and claims more than one card is sold every minute.

The cards offer calls to 60 countries for 2p a minute and can be used from any mobile phone, landline or payphone. Tesco offers an example – a 30-minute daily call to India using the Tesco International Calling Card costs less than 64p – which is significantly cheaper than either BT or Virgin.

Tesco insists the service is very simple to use, with clear pricing and no hidden charges such as daily maintenance fees, rounding up charges and call disconnection fees.

After the trial period, the calling card will be rolled out across Tesco stores across the UK before the end of the year.

"(The) calling card has been very successful so far and we expect this little card to be one of the bestsellers this Christmas as people call their loved ones abroad," said Lance Batchelor, Chief Executive Officer of Tesco Telecoms and Tesco Mobile.

According to Tesco, the international calls market is estimated to be worth £250 million per year.
