The festive season is upon us, and for many that'll mean some time off work to relax and spend time with family. If you're in search of some entertainment during your time off, we've rounded up 10 Christmas apps for iPad and iPhone to keep you in the holiday spirit.

12 Days of Gifts

The first app you'll want to download is Apple's 12 Days of Gifts app (formally known as 12 Days of Christmas). Apple will be giving away iOS apps, music, films and books for the 12 Days following Christmas Day. Apple is offering a “gift to get you started” too: Lorde's 'No Better' and the music video for 'Royals'.

Bear and Hare

John Lewis's hit Christmas advert has an accompanying app, available free from the iOS App Store. It's an illustrated story narrated by Lauren Laverne, and it also includes a Christmas Card Maker so you can add your photo to a Bear and Hare Christmas e-card.

Photo Combine Xmas

We love this simple but effective app that lets you transform your photos into Christmassy images by providing Christmas-themed frames including a snowflake, Christmas tree and reindeer.

Toca Hair Salon – Christmas Gift

Great fun for kids (and grown-ups, too), Toca Boca's Christmas-themed hair salon lets you transform Santa's hair and beard. Topzy the tree needs a hair cut too, and you can add decoractions and accessories to its branches.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire? 2014

Great fun for family gatherings, the Who Wants to be a Millionaire show is available for iPad and iPhone, and has been updated to include brand new questions about recent events.

Super Mega Worm vs Santa Saga

This totally bonkers game sees Wojira the Mega Worm go head to head with Santa. There are 15 levels in each game (this app includes both the original Super Mega Worm vs Santa and its sequel) and two game modes.

Ski Safari

Stay ahead of the avalanche that threatens to catch up to Sven the skier. Use animals such as Penguins, Eagles and even Yetis to help you go faster and escape the snow.

Talking Santa

From the makers of Talking Tom and Friends comes Talking Santa, a simple but endlessly entertaining app that repeats messages you've recored through your built-in microphone. The app can be used to create e-cards to send to your friends and family, too.

Use a photograph of yourself or a friend and watch them become a hilarious dancing elf. This app also has an e-card feature, and is bound to give the recipients a giggle on Christmas day.

How to Cook Everything

Finally, here's an app to help with the Christmas dinner. How to Cook Everything does just what the title suggests, with 2,000 illustrated recipes. There's a free essentials version with 120 recipes if you don't want to cough up the £6.99, too.
