Apple sold more iPhones (6.9 million) in the September quarter than Research in Motion sold BlackBerrys (6.1 million).

Apple CEO Steve Jobs complimented his competitor saying, "RIM is a good company that makes good products. It's surprising that after 15 months in the market we could outsell them in any quarter."

Apple announced during its earnings call with analysts that Apple is now the third largest phone maker in the world when measured by revenue behind Nokia and Samsung, with Research in Motion the seventh largest.
