Apple has revealed its Best of 2013 list on iTunes, highlighting the top music, films, books, TV programmes, podcasts and apps that have graced the iTunes Store this year. Here, we round-up the Editors' Choice award winners and top sellers of 2013.

Best iPhone apps of 2013

In this year's 'Best of' list, Apple has featured six outstanding iPhone apps. Apple's App of the Year is Duolingo, a language-learning app, while the Game of the Year is Ridiculous Fishing – A Tale of Redemption. Apple's four runners up were journey-planning app Citymapper, kids vocabulary app Endless Alphabet, and games Device 6 and Plants vs Zombies 2.

Best iPad apps of 2013

Apple lists a further six apps in its Best of 2013 iPad apps, giving the Disney Animated app the App of the Year award. Game of the Year is Frogmind's Badland.

Runners up are Native Intruments' Traktor DJ and WWF Together, as well as games XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Impossible Road.

The most downloaded paid app of 2013 is Minecraft – Pocket Edition for both iPad and iPhone. In both charts, Angry Birds Star Wars and Temple Run: Oz are also high in the top seller lists.

When it comes to free apps, the Candy Crush Saga gets top spot among the best sellers of the year for both iPad and iPhone, while Snapchat was second for iPhone and Youtube second for iPad.

Best films of 2013

Apple chose Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity as its Best Blockbuster of the year, while the brilliant Despicable Me 2 got Best Family Film. The Best Documentary Editor's Choice goes to Blackfish and Best Performance is Behind Candelabra.

As for the top sellers of the year, 007 takes the top spot with Skyfall. Iron Man 3, Django Unchained and Star Trek Into Darkness are also among the top sellers.

Best TV programmes of 2013

Breaking Bad is Apple's Editor's Choice this year, named Best Series by the company in the Best of 2013 iTunes list. The title of Best Breakthrough goes to detective drama Broadchurch, while Peter Mullan's portrayal of Matt Mitcham in BBC's Top of the Lake earns Best Character.

The Best Episode Editor's Choice is The Wrong Mans' series premiere.

The second season of Homeland was actually the top seller this year, though, followed by the first season of the show. Breaking Bad comes in third while Suits, Peppa Pig, Sherlock and Downton Abbey are also among the top 10.

Best music of 2013

When it comes to music, Apple picked London Grammar's 'If You Wait (Deluxe Version)' as its Album of the Year, while Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' scored the title of Song of the Year.

Apple named Arctic Monkeys the Artist of the Year and gave HAIM the Breakthrough Artist Editors Choice award.

The top selling albums of the year include compilation album 'Now That's What I Call Music! 85', Bastille's 'All This Bad Blood' and Emeli Sande's 'Our Version of Events'.

The top selling song of 2013 was Robin Thicke's catchy 'Blurred Lines', while 'Wake Me Up' by Avicii and Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' were runners up.

Best books of 2013

Apple named Chimanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah Best Fiction of 2013, and Naoki Higashida's The Reason I Jump as the best non-fiction book of the year.

The Best British Crime Editor's Choice Award goes to Tim Weaver's Never Coming Back and the Best Children's Book goes to Neil Gaiman's Fortunately, the milk.

E L James and Sylvia Day dominate the top sellers fiction chart this year, while The Fast Diet is 2013's top selling non-fiction book. F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic The Great Gatsby is the most downloaded free book from iTunes, followed by 101 Best Jokes.

Best podcasts of 2013

Finally, Apple has given four Editors' Choice Awards to Podcasts. The Best New Audio Podcast is Josh Widdicombe's 'The XFM', while 'Desert Island Discs with Kirsty Young' gets Best Classic Audio Podcast and 'TateShots' gets Best Classic Video Podcast.

National Theatre's 'The Shed' has been named Best New Video Podcast by Apple.
