There are now more than 10,000 apps available on the Mac App Store. The Mac App Store launched in January 2011 with 1,600 apps, 16 months, and 8,400 apps later, there are 10,339.
By December the Mac App Store had seen more than 100 million downloads, according to Apple. Announcing that mile stone, Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller said: “In just three years the App Store changed how people get mobile apps, and now the Mac App Store is changing the traditional PC software industry. With more than 100 million downloads in less than a year, the Mac App Store is the largest and fastest growing PC software store in the world.”
The Mac App Store is included with Mac OS X Lion (which is itself available for download through the Mac App Store). The Mac App Store is also available as a software update for any Mac running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Users can browse new and noteworthy apps, find out what’s hot, see staff favourites, search categories and look up top charts for paid and free apps, as well as see user ratings and reviews.
App developers keep 70 percent of the revenue of app sales in the Mac App Store and several have since decided to offer their software exclusively through the Mac App Store.
Back in March Apple celebrated when iOS App Store downloads topped 25 billion. Apple claims that more than one billion apps are downloaded from the App Store per month. There are 600,000 apps available through the iOS App Store.
The Mac App Store was launched two-and-a-half years after Apple's App Store for iOS.
