It's not been a particularly well-kept secret that Unreal Tournament 3 was Mac-bound - Mark Rein, founder of Epic Games (the title's developer), said as much in an interview in July. But on Tuesday MacSoft officially announced plans to release the game in early 2008.

Unreal Tournament 3 is the latest in the series of popular first-person shooters for PC and video game consoles. The game features futuristic weapons and vehicles; you take to massive landscapes to do arena-style battle against other computer-controlled opponents (or play online against other Mac and PC-based adversaries).

Unreal Tournament 3 is powered by Unreal Engine 3, which features more realistic effects, physics and artificial intelligence than ever before. The game sports a single-player mode with a branching mission storyline; quite a departure from past games, which just focus on rotating sequences of arena combat.

Now all that remains is an announcement about Gears of War, another Unreal Engine 3-powered game that Rein indicated was on its way to the Macintosh. The tactical shooter has been a tremendous hit on Xbox 360 since its release, and was also ported to run on Windows, with new content.
