Macromedia has secured $44 million for its online entertainment business.

The funding includes investment by venture firm Sequoia Capital, and Jim Clark, founder of Healtheon, Netscape and Silicon Graphics.

The cash will help fuel both growth in content and to build the next generation of its site, the company said.

Macromedia’s interactive entertainment site features games, cartoons and music. It also partners with major entertainment companies and Web distribution leaders to offer artists and publishers a powerful distribution model. According to Macromedia, shockwave has tempted 50,000 new registrants each day since its launch in July.
