Allume Systems (formerly Aladdin Systems) has announced StuffIt Deluxe 9.0, the newest version of its compression software for Mac OS X.
The new version claims faster file compression and decompression, an improved user interface, and improved backup features to make storing files on multiple CDs, DVDs and other media faster and easier.
StuffIt can compress data so more of it can be stored on a single CD or DVD, and can automatically split larger files so they can be stored on multiple disks.
Built-in segmentation technology means that when archives are being saved to CD or DVD, they are automatically split across multiple disks as they are being created. This helps archive iTunes music, iPhoto libraries, or any other files to CD.
The software uses Allume's new StuffIt X file format, which claims to offer smaller file sizes, the capacity to resurrect corrupted archives and powerful encryption.
This version also lets users save archives directly to FTP servers or their .Mac iDisks; takes advantage of dual processor G5s and integrates within OS X's Finder.
Hailing the backup tools, senior product manager, Matthew Covingtton, said: "These new features make it easy for even novice users to protect their important files by making archive copies."
The utility can also create .Zip archives that preserve Mac-specific file attributes, such as the resource fork, while at the same time remaining 100 per cent compatibility with Windows-based PCs.
The product costs $79.99.
