Amazon UK is taking pre-orders for Apple's new operating system, Mac OS X 10.2, and offering a discount price.
However, the company isn't knocking the equivalent of $50 from Apple's recommended retail price, as Amazon.com briefly did. Instead, Mac OS X will be sold for £90.99.
The product ships August 24 (though Amazon's site currently claims August 13, that date is being changed), and is available for pre-order now.
Amazon's senior software product manager, Tamsin Todd, explained: “I know Mac users were interested to see how our price compared to that of Amazon.com's, however, we could never make a direct comparison between the two as the market conditions in the US and the UK are completely different. We maintain competitive pricing on Mac products for the UK.”
Asked if there were any plans to sell Macs online in the UK, reflecting practice by its parent company, Todd explained: “We don’t comment on what may or may not happen on the site in the future”.
