Apple has confirmed a reliability problem with some older SuperDrive-equipped PowerBooks when burning to faster 8x DVD-R media.
“Some earlier PowerBook G4 computers that have a SuperDrive with a 2x DVD-R write speed may not be able to burn 8x DVD-R media reliably,” Apple warns.
A note on the company’s website explains how PowerBook owners can uncover which type of SuperDrive they use, and how to check its model number.
SuperDrives which contain the code, “UJ-816” as part of their serial number are likely to be affected.
The company recommends users should only use “2x or 4x DVD-R media”.
