Apple has announced a vastly redesigned G5 iMac range.

Speaking in Paris, Apple VP worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller revealed Apple has sold 7.5 million iMacs in the past four years, and introduced the new design. "It's the world's thinnest desktop", he said. "It's just two-inches thick.

The new product integrates the entire computer right into the flat-panel display - it looks like a white Cinema Display, and is available in both 17- and 20-inch configurations with G5 processors running as fast as 1.8GHz. The machine stands on an aluminium foot.

“Just like the iPod redefined portable digital-music players, the new iMac G5 redefines what users expect from a consumer desktop,” said Schiller.

“With the entire system, including a gorgeous 17- or 20-inch display, just two inches thin, a lot of people will be wondering ‘where did the computer go?’ ”

Confirming expectations, the new iMac looks like a white 17-inch Cinema Display with a DVD slot-loader on the side and an aluminium foot with a grey Apple logo on the front.
