Apple will open its first retail store in Beijing, China next summer, said Apple chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer last night.

Announcing yet another record quarter for the company, Oppenheimer revealed that the company's sales in Asia-Pacific were the strongest of any region, rising 52 per cent.

Japan remains the company’s “most challenging market,” said Oppenheimer, though Mac sales were up 14 per cent year-over-year there, the best sales growth in the country in seven months.

Apple’s sales rose faster in Europe than in the US, where Mac sales climbed 47 per cent year-on-year.

"Europe did not have the typical lull in August that we have seen," observed chief operating officer Tim Cook last night.

Apple sold a record 2.16 million Macs in the quarter, an increase of 34 per cent, while it sold 10.2 million iPods, up 17 per cent. Apple also sold 1.12 million iPhones.

In line with the rest of the industry, Apple's strongest Mac growth segment was its laptop sales, which accounted for 62 per cent of all Macs sold, up 37 per cent year-on-year. Desktop sales climbed 31 per cent. Apple ended the quarter with “slightly less than three weeks of Mac inventory,” Oppenheimer said.
