Apple has been instrumental in bringing a high-end product management solution to Mac OS X.

UGS has confirmed plans to release Mac OS X verisons of its NX and Teamcenter products. These niche products are important because they are the first product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions to reach the platform.

The software offers one-stop access to the full range of development processes in product design, manufacturing and simulation, according to the company.

Think Secret reveals that Apple has been instrumental in ensuring the software reaches the Mac, because the company has agreed to purchase a "significant number of licences" for the software. Apple already uses NX as a hardware-product design tool. The software is also used in car and aircraft design.

Announcing the move to Mac, UGS executive vice president of products Chuck Grindstaff said: "Consistent with UGS' open business model, we are proud to offer our products on Mac OS X in order to help even more companies transform their process of innovation.

"UGS can now give worldwide Mac users access to best-of-breed PLM solutions that take advantage of the excellent performance, security and stability of Apple's innovative hardware and software."

NX offers a broad range of integrated, fully associative CAD/CAM/CAE applications and was voted 2005 Product of the Year by the readers of NASA Tech Briefs.

The company describes its Teamcenter software as: "Powering innovation and productivity by connecting people and processes with knowledge."
