Yesterday's Apple email newsletter included an image of the packaging for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger - but the image has since been removed from Apple's servers and no longer shows up in the HTML version of the newsletter.

Apple's reasons for denying customers the chance to see the new packaging are unclear. It could feasibly be because the design being displayed had not been approved internally.

The fact that Apple had the image ready to use could suggest that the launch of the product is imminent. Apple has only stated that it will be released in the first half of 2005 - by June.

According to MacMinute, the new black packaging shows a platinum X that gives the perception that it is extending off the front of the box. The large X is centrally lit by a spotlight – a reference to Tiger's advanced new search engine.

The packaging is very similar to the Tiger CD design Apple has been displaying on its site for some time.
