French firm Archos has launched the Gmini 402 Pocket Multimedia Center.

The 20GB device supports video, audio and photo images and is one of Microsoft's certified PlaysForSure media players.

PlaysForSure is Microsoft's programme for its manufacturing and service providers. It means the devices will work with Microsoft-powered and rights protected music and movie download services.

The device - which comes from a firm that has been Apple's stiffest competitor in the space in France - carries a 2.2-inch colour LCD screen and measures 4.17-x-2.37-x-0.69-inches. It weighs 5.64 ounces.

Additional features include auto-synchronisation with a computer; the capacity to transfer photos directly from digital cameras using USB host; support for MPEG-4, Windows Media Video files, MP3, WMA, and protected WMA audio files. The Gmini 402 costs $299.95.
