The BBC has launched the Open Earth Archive, a library of free video footage of the natural world.

The video footage is available for free download. Downloaders can keep it for their personal collection or edit the clips for their own non-commercial video projects. The material is available under the BBC's Creative Archive licence.

The archive includes unseen rushes from a new show, footage from The Natural World and extracts from series' narrated by David Attenborough - plus images and audio clips.

The BBC is also running a competition for novices to build short videos using the materials, with winners getting to spend time in a BBC edit suite.

Under terms of the license, the BBC's video assets can only be downloaded within the UK.
