Epson has launched the Expression 1680 and 1680 Pro scanners.
Both 48-bit devices offer an output of 1,600-x-3,200 dpi, and can recognize 280 trillion colours and 65,000 shades of grey, Epson claims. The 1680 creates a full-colour preview in ten seconds, and can scan an 8.5-x-11-inch colour photo in less than 23 seconds at 300dpi. It will scan a 35mm slide at 1,600dpi in less than 65 seconds, Epson's figures claim.
They feature SilverFast Ai 5, a scanning-enhancement solution that lets users enhance images. It will eliminate noise, combine images, zoom into details, and remove unwanted subjects from the scans.
The 1680 Pro ships with a transparency unit, also available as an option with the standard 1680. An optional automatic document-feeder is also available. The scanners offer USB, FireWire and SCSI connectivity.
The software bundle includes Adobe Photoshop LE, Epson TWAIN Pro 2, Xerox Textbridge Classic, Presto!, and Scan Server software. The 1680 costs £649, the 1680 Pro is £859.
