Extensis is offering Suitcase purchasers a free copy of Morrison SoftDesign’s FontDoctor 5.1. The company is also offering FontDoctor 5.1 at a special price to registered users of its Suitcase 10 font-management application.

SoftDesign’s application diagnoses, repairs and organizes fonts, and is available for Mac OS 8.6-9.x and OS X. There’s a free demo version of the software available for download from SoftDesign’s Web site. Its usual cost is $69.99 for a single user license. FontDoctor 5.1 is free with a new purchase of Suitcase 10 (£69.99, or £34.99 to upgrade). Registered users can buy the program for just $29.95.

Fontastic FontDoctor 5.1 supports TrueType, PostScript Types 1 and 3, Multiple Master, OpenType, DataFork, and bitmap fonts. It repairs font ID conflicts, checks for duplicate fonts, mixed font types, missing bitmaps, and can repair damaged font tables. The application can also sort and assemble fonts into an organized font library, print font sheets, convert Windows fonts to Mac-format, generate font diagnosis reports, and scan font folders on local hard drives and over a network.

Extensis Suitcase 10 automatically activates needed fonts as required. It’s compatible with QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, Macromedia FreeHand, CorelDraw and Microsoft’s Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Entourage applications.

The new Suitcase Auto-Activation plug-in for Adobe Illustrator 8, 9, or 10 activates fonts in either Illustrator or EPS files. The plug-in for Illustrator 10 works in both Mac OS 9 and OS X (Suitcase 10.0.1 or higher is required). It uses Apple’s FontSync technology to ensure that the exact font required is switched on.

Suitcase 10.1 will view fonts in all OS X font directories, and activate or de-activate fonts in Cocoa, Carbon, and Classic applications.
