A removable FireWire hard drive bay has been released by
Ratoc Systems. The FireDock system allows hard drives to be used for project and data back-up, file-sharing and archival applications.
The FireDock system includes the FireDock docking bay with a FireWire to UDMA (Ultra Direct Memory Access) IDE (Independent Drive Electronics) interface module and individual drive trays with mounting screws.
Hot swappable, the FireDock system provides over 30MBps data transfer speeds.
The docking bay's UDMA IDE interface module is for high-performance FireWire-to-IDE conversion. It supports UDMA/66 transfer modes, and achieves over 30MBps sustained read-speed. The interface module includes two 400Mbps FireWire ports, and works as a stand-alone repeater.
The system is compatible with any Power Mac, iMac, PowerBook or iBook with FireWire ports running on Mac OS X 10.1.x, 9.2.x, 9.1 or 9.0.4.
Formatting and partitioning utility software is bundled for Mac OS 9.1 and 9.0.4. Two versions of the drive are distributed by Channel Dynamics, a £205 single-bay chassis that holds one drive, and a £325 dual-bay that holds two.
