There's a treat for strategy gamers - the all-free, open-source Mac OS X version of turn-based game The Battle of Wesnoth 1.0.

The fantasy-themed, turn-based strategy game lets players build and train armies, allowing them to create pools of tough warriors to be called up in crisis. Experienced warriors gain powerful new features and spells.

"Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate heir, or use your dread power over the Undead to dominate the land of mortals, or lead your glorious Orcish tribe to victory against the humans who dared despoil your lands," the Wesnoth website proclaims.

Players can build and customise units and write their own scenarios. The game also supports multi-player battles over the Internet. The 1.0 release includes code, scenarios, images and music.

The Battle for Wesnoth is open-source and available to download from the Wesnoth website.

Players must build up their fighting force, starting from a single leader and a small amount of gold. Over 200 unit types in six major factions are available, all with different abilities, weapons and spells. Hundreds of campaign scenarios are available for download from within the game itself.
