The French consumer watchdog – UFC-Que Choisi – has challenged Apple, claiming it has misled consumers because music downloaded from iTunes can only be played on the iPod.
The FT reports that the watchdog is also attacking Sony for the same reason. The two companies are accused of being deceitful and criticised for their forced selling of two products tied together.
The companies have been issued with summonses that require them to appear in court later this year.
This follows the French arm of Virgin's decision to complain to the French Competition Council that Apple's refusal to license its FairPlay DRM meant it was not playing fair.
