Motorola's G5-processor development team has improved AltiVec/Velocity Engine performance and is delivering speeds of 1GHz and above.

Apple's top-secret development team has reportedly been sent two prototype chips that operate at clock speeds of 2.4GHz. Most fabricated G5s run at between 1GHz and 1.4GHz, with a number capable of reaching 1.6GHz.

These processors are the newest pre-release iteration of the chip. Motorola scientists continue to develop the G5 processor, whiich is currently at version 0.6 with version 0.7 expected "soon".

The Register reports that Apple is already distributing Macs containing prototype G5 processors to certain key developers. A total of 500 machines are said to be in distribution to the high-security development labs of Apple's chief developer partners.
