High-quality movie playback on PDAs and other mobile devices is a step closer, thanks to German researchers.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS has combined MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding with MPEG-4 High Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding for high quality, real-time movie playback on ARM-based PDAs.

The institute claims the combination of the two codecs guarantees "best audio and video quality at very low data rates".

The MPEG-4 AVC Baseline Profile, optimized for Wireless MMXTM on Intel XScale PXA27x processors, can achieve a video resolution of up to QVGA (320-x-240 pixels) at 25 frames per second, claims the institute.

MPEG-4 HE-ACC allows excellent audio quality for stereo content at bit rates of 48 kbit/s and below.
