The first high-speed cable modem service for UK Mac-users is available from Telewest now.
Called blueyonder, the Mac and PC-friendly service launched last year – but only to a limited number of users. Telewest has geared up its infrastructure, and is now offering the service to over four million households in its franchise areas – including Hackney and Camden in London, Edinburgh, Tyneside, Sheffield, Birmingham and Bath.
blueyonder offers users Internet access at speeds up to ten times that of a dial-up modem connection. Like the consumer version of ADSL, it offers data speeds up to 512K downstream and 128K upstream. blueyonder is an always-on connection which does not tie-up the phone line and call charges are unmetred.
Installation costs Installation costs £50, and then a fixed fee of £33 per month. The service supports Mac OS as well as a variety of Windows operating systems. Chad Raube, Telewest's head of marketing for Internet services, said: "Broadband cable services such as blueyonder will revolutionize the Internet as we know it today."
blueyonder users also get 30MB of Web space and five email accounts (of which three can be aliases).
