Apple has announced that it has sold 50 million songs through the iTunes Music Store.
The 50 millionth song to be purchased was The Path of Thorns by Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan.
According to Apple, iTunes users are downloading 2.5 million songs a week – suggesting that the store could shift 130 million tunes a year.
Apple's CEO Steve Jobs said: "Crossing 50 million songs is a major milestone for iTunes and the emerging digital music era. With over 50 million songs already downloaded and an additional 2.5 million songs being downloaded every week, it's increasingly difficult to imagine others ever catching up with iTunes."
This number does not include songs redeemed from the Pepsi/iTunes promotion.
