The Discovery Channel has come to the iTunes Music Store in the US.
Discovery Communications today announced that content from Discovery's family of networks is now available for purchase on iTunes.
The offering includes programming from the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, Discovery Health Channel and Discovery Kids. The broadcaster has released a dozen series and special shows from Discovery, these cost $1.99 per episode.
"Now, new possibilities are opened for people who want to use Discovery's high-quality knowledge-rich content on the go, while we also promote Discovery's television networks," said Don Baer, senior executive vice president, strategy and development, Discovery Communications. "Wherever they are and whenever they want, consumers can use the iPod to learn and be entertained with Discovery's content about people, places, cultures, science, health and much more."
"We're thrilled to bring video programming from Discovery Communications to the iTunes Music Store," said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of iTunes. "Customers can now choose from a wide range of great video content from Discovery's family of networks."
Discovery programming available on iTunes includes: the World's Best Travel series, National Parks short films and Passport To Europe from the Travel Channel; Amazing Babies and Pregnancy for Dummies from Discovery Health; and Kenny the Shark from Discovery Kids.
Additional series and specials will be made available on iTunes, including Mythbusters, Extreme Engineering from Discovery and Most Extreme and Breed All About It from Animal Planet.
Discovery will also offer vignettes through the free podcasting feature on iTunes.
The company said the move to iTunes displays its "aggressive activity in the multiplatform marketplace in creating new services to bring its high-quality, informative and entertaining content to consumers, wherever they are".
Last month, Discovery launched the first of its US broadband channels.
