Apple and Dell may release next-generation laptops featuring Intel's 45-nanometre Penryn processor at around the same time, a report claims.

CNet is claiming Dell will introduce laptops based on the new processor as soon as next week. This report emerges as speculation and industry rumours continue to suggest Apple may also release upgraded models of its MacBook Pro range, also driven by the new processor.

Among other improvements, the new laptops should offer superior performance and slightly improved battery life, and will run at lower operating temperatures than the existing models, speculation claims.

Some claim the new model MacBooks may field the new MacBook Air multi-touch trackpad.
