Apple has introduced an add-on MPEG-2 Playback Component for recently-released QuickTime 6.
This lets QuickTime 6 users play back MPEG-2 content, which hasn't been possible until now. The MPEG-2 Playback Component costs $19.99, and is available from the Apple Store.
MPEG-2 is the basis for such products as digital-TV set-top boxes and DVD discs. The solution lets users playback and create content using the standard. It's also possible to transcode MPEG-2 streams into QuickTime for export into other formats – for example, MPEG-4.
QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component can be downloaded. It's important to have QuickTime 6 installed before making the purchase.
