Insurer Nationwide has stepped up to the plate to begin offering home insurance packages that cover the loss of legally acquired digital downloads.

The move reflects the increasing prevalence of digital sales within music sales. Digital sales now account for 50 per cent of UK singles sales, for example, according to BPI spokespeople.

The insurance will also cover games, ringtones and movies. Claimants will have to be able to prove they own the downloads, so printing iTunes receipts will be essential to keep a collection covered.

Other insurers are also considering offering similar cover, according to The Independent.

Citing Screen Digest, that report claims the total market for online music will double by the end of this year.
