Apple may be suffering quality control problems with its new generation iPod, claims iPodLounge.

The iPod enthusiast Web site claims that "approximately 42 per cent" of their new generation iPods have manifested an audio defect, "while others have complained of receiving soiled or physically damaged hardware." Both 20GB and 40GB new model iPods are reportedly affected.

The report claims the defect manifests itself by causing static and hard drive sounds to overlap with music playback. The site has also published a testing method to determine if your new iPod is affected.

The full report is available from iPodLounge. Apple has declined to comment on this story.
