Apple has unleashed new generations of its pro-audio software, Logic Pro 7 and Logic Express 7.
With a claimed 200,000-strong user base to please, the product revisions offer cutting-edge new software instruments, synthesizer, drum machine, software instruments and many other enhancements.
Logic Pro 7 offers new software instruments such as Sculpture, a component-modelling based synthesizer; UltraBeat, an innovative and powerful drum machine; and new plug-ins including Guitar Amp Pro, a full-featured guitar amplifier simulator. It also offers over 100 workflow enhancements, new mastering plug-ins and support for Apple Loops.
Distributed music making reaches Macs
Distributed computing takes a step forward, too: Logic Pro 7 debuts distributed audio processing, a technology that lets music makers "tap into" a virtually unlimited number of Macs to expand available Digital Signal Processing (DSP) power.
"The result is an audio and music production system with processing power previously unimaginable for native based systems. This breakthrough feature allows musicians and audio engineers to be even more creative by using a virtually unlimited number of plug-ins to create and process sounds," Apple said.
Logic Express 7 offers basic professional tools for students and "advanced hobbyists", but lacks some of the high-end features. Both iterations also offer support for projects from GarageBand.
Apple's growing music ecosystem
Apple's vice president of applications marketing Rob Schoeben said: "From beginners to pros, Apple is broadening the market with a complete line of music creation and production tools. With Logic Pro 7, we’re taking professional music creation to the next level with the industry's most advanced feature set for pro audio."
Logic Pro 7 includes Sculpture and UltraBeat: Sculpture simulates the behavioural characteristics of a vibrating string or bar, so users can control and create their own dynamic and expressive sounds; With an eye on drum and bass, UltraBeat is a powerful drum machine that uses several types of synthesis including FM, subtractive, sample-based and component modelling. UltraBeat consists of up to 25 independently modifiable drum voices and integrates a step sequencer.
Guitar Amp Pro is a new amplifier simulator that recreates the sounds of 11 well-known guitar amps. Options include: 14 speaker cabinet selections, microphone brand and position, EQ type and settings. The software also includes mastering plug-ins (including EQ and metering).
New productivity enhancement features include: song templates, channel strip save and recall, professional shuffle and auto crossfade edit modes, all of which are accessible from within the Arrange window. Mastering and CD burning application, WaveBurner, also features in Logic Pro 7.
Both Logic Pro 7 (available now) and Logic Express 7 (available in October) are also compatible with Apple's GarageBand software instruments. System requirements are described here.
