Nvidia may supply the video GPUs (graphic processing units) shipped as standard with next-generation PowerBooks, online reports claim.
It's rumoured that new PowerBooks may ship with a 16MB GeForce2 chipset, which is superior to the ATI Rage Mobility 128 installed in existing PowerBook models. This would give them the graphics power of their desktop counterparts.
Go2Mac.com claims the move is a result of Nvidia "being much more enthusiastic about working with Apple than ATI has been of late”.
Industry insiders say Nvidia’s recent $112 million take-over of 3dfx puts it ahead of ATI, whose next-generation PCI card – the Radeon 2 Maxx – won't be able to compete on memory bandwidth with Nvidia’s next-generation Ultra chips.
