Ofcom has released proposals to boost the power of signals used in WiFi networks.

The regulator sees that extending WiFi range could be part of a solution to bring broadband internet to remote rural areas of the UK. Boosting transmission power would lower the cost of creating accessible networks in such areas.

Ofcom wants UK operators to deploy so-called "mesh networks" - networks in which users can wander freely between hot spots. These are the kind of networks presently being deployed across the US.

One UK operator, The Cloud, is currently working to deploy such a network in the City area of London, reports the BBC.
