Palm has enhanced support for multiple expansion standards in its handheld OS.

The expansion architecture will be bundled in future versions of PalmOS. It promises to make the platform more flexible. All PalmOS licensees will be permitted to use the new technology to integrate any expansion standard into their products.

The new architecture supports the Secure Digital (SD) Card, Sony’s MemoryStick, CompactFlash, Handspring’s Springboard modules and Palms’ currently supported expansion options.

Palm hopes future expansion options will include Bluetooth wireless connectivity, electronic books, MP3 players and more. Kodak, Toshiba, SanDisk and Matsushita all have products in development for Palm that will support the new SD standard. Palm products supporting the new architecture should ship in 2001.
