Black is the new white for Macworld Online readers and their iPod nanos, according to a recent poll.

We asked which colour of iPod nano readers would prefer and 1,309 readers voted in the poll: 37 per cent (485) readers believe black is the right choice for them.

That could translate into good news for Apple if that colour preference is reflected in sales - the black case is only available on the 8GB iPod nano, which costs £169.

Silver - which is available on the entry-level 2GB £99 iPod nano - is the second favourite colour, attracting 284 votes (22 per cent of all votes cast).

Many urged us to spare a thought for white. Apple no longer supplies a white iPod nano, which caused 231 readers (18 per cent) to say they "would have liked white".

While pink was the leading colour for many iPod mini buyers, just 63 readers (5 per cent) reckon it's the right colour for a nano. Green beats pink slightly, attracting 107 votes, (8 per cent).

But it's blue that comes in as the third-favourite iPod tone, attracting 139 votes, or 11 per cent of all votes cast.
