DigiDesign has demonstrated the Mac OS X version of ProTools 6.0 – its popular music creation system – at the Audio Engineering Society Convention.

The release harnesses many of the audio features of OS X 10.2. Such features include integrated MIDI instrument support, support for CoreAudio, and a number of features that use 10.2’s low latency speeds. It offers enhanced performance when used with dual processor systems.

DigiDesign vice president and general manager Dave Lebolt describes the release as "one of our most exciting yet".

Pro Tools users will benefit from numerous enhancements, including better file and session management, enhanced MIDI functionality, and increased mixing options.

New DigiBase technology offers both file and session management, allowing users to view complete information on any file, including sound waveforms, duration and time stamps, as well as annotated comments. Files can be searched or imported directly into Pro Tools using this feature. DigiBase Pro creates catalogue-referencing files, including within sound effects libraries. This feature ships as standard only with DigiDesign's music making solutions, but is available separately.

MIDI functionality in Pro Tools 6.0 fully supports Apple's Core MIDI services; Pro Tools can furnish sample-accurate MIDI with system-compatible software synthesizers and offers up to sub-millisecond-accurate timing with MIDI I/O and others. The pro-audio suite also supports the importation of MIDI/audio playlists while preserving mixer layout, routing and plug-in settings. There's a new import Session Data command, capable of importing any combination of track data including audio and MIDI playists and more.

Additional features for owners of DigiDesign hardware include Machine Profile, a utility to create profiles for arming any Sony nine-pin controllable deck, with custom track-name entry for arming tracks remotely. TimeCode management has also been improved.

DigiDesign will preview Pro Tools 6.0 at DigiWorld, taking place at 33 Portland Place, London, from November 15-16. For details call 01753 658 496.

DigiWorld will also feature the now-shipping, £1,870 Digi002 studio solution. This FireWire device supports up to 96KHz sample-rate support.
