Sony revealed a 13 per cent fall in quarterly profit yesterday.
The company attributed these losses to falling prices in its consumer electronics segment, and its failure so far to compete with Apple in the digital music market.
Sony is preparing to engage Apple in the digital music market: it plans to set up a global music download service using its PlayStation brand, according to Brand Republic.
This will let users download music directly to their PlayStation Portable, with its initial incarnation being as a games levels and upgrades service, to be followed by a music sales launch later this summer, the report claims.
The company still returned a 138.17 billion Yen profit, but saw profits of 158.8 billion Yen in the same period last year.
