Apple has updated the firmware for SuperDrive-equipped Power Macs.
Firmware Update 1.0 addresses an incompatibility with the recently introduced 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW media, and the 2x SuperDrive in the Power Mac G4. These incompatibilities can damage the SuperDrive in extreme cases.
The update is required for SuperDrive-equipped configurations of the Power Mac G4 Digital Audio, the Quicksilver Power Mac G4 and the Quicksilver 2002. All these models shipped before August 2002.
The update also enables users to eject audio copy-protected audio Cds, or those that have mastering errors. It is for Mac OS X 10.1 or later and is available for download from Apple's Web site.
Last month, Apple released a similar SuperDrive update for flat-panel iMacs.
The updates follow September's warning from SuperDrive manufacturer Pioneer, which warned users that some of its mechanisms could overheat when using the new high-speed media formats.
