A network of UK Apple dealers is offering to upgrade Macs that lack DVD drives to Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger".
New of these fixed price upgrades follows Apple terminating its fulfilment programme for Tiger buyers to receive their software on CD instead of DVD on July 9.
This means that Macs without DVD drives cannot easily be upgraded to Tiger.
"All the Apple resellers we know think that Apple should have continued offering Tiger on CD for at least another three months", explained Robert Peckham, executive director of the UK Mac-Dealer Association, "and we offered to continue the fulfilment programme on Apple's behalf,
but they simply said it was a global policy."
Users can take their Mac to one of the participating resellers around the UK, in order to have their DVD copy of Mac OS X 10.4 installed on their CD-drive only Mac. Prices listed below:
Upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4 from any version of Mac OS X
£19, if Tiger purchased from the reseller;
£29, if Tiger purchased elsewhere
Upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4 from any version of Mac OS 9
£29, if Tiger purchased from the reseller;
£39, if Tiger purchased elsewhere .
The UK Mac Dealer Association says the service can also be carried out at a client's premises, but specific dealer's usual call-out fees will then also apply.
All prices exclude VAT.
