US electronics retailer, Circuit City, has published a survey which shows that new computers - particularly notebooks - are the top shopping choice for US students this year.

The company says that as many as 17.5 million US college and university students are going back to school this year - and over half of them begin shopping for a new computer in June and July.

The results reveal that 72 per cent of US students can't live without a computer. Notebook computers are tools of choice for 72 per cent of students as well, the report explains.

In an unusual twist, the company also reveals that 52 per cent of students are concerned about PC security. Responding to this concern, Circuit City mentions its free PC health check-up service, before recommending some Windows-based notebook choices for students.

Apple, with its new MacBook receiving media acclaim, is betting that students will choose a the more security-proof Mac.
