Handspring will introduce its VisorPhone in Europe at the 3GSM World Congress this week.
The product is expected to be available in the first half of 2001. VisorPhone is a GSM world phone module that adds to the personal information manager functions of Handspring Visor handhelds.
VisorPhone offers Address Book dialling (from Visor to VisorPhone), enhanced caller ID, conference calling and a set of other features. The product is being distributed among GSM carriers for testing.
The device also offers Short Messaging Service (SMS) features, it's possible to input SMS messages using the Handspring PDA, and despatch them using the VisorPhone. The company also plans to integrate a Web browser into the product on launch.
"When we look back on the handheld industry years from now, we'll see it clearly divided into two periods of evolution: before and after wireless. The handheld industry is just now beginning to cross that divide," said Joe Sipher, Handspring's vice president of product marketing.
