The Amateur Web Animator 1999 competition has opened, and is hunting for the hottest new talent in Web animation.

First prize is a brand-new iMac, while runners-up get software from Macromedia, MetaCreations, Symantec, Digital Workshop and books from Computer Manuals. Winners also see their work showcased on TV and displayed in the .tv Web site. .tv is Sky TV's technology channel.

Web enthusiasts can enter one of the following categories: Flash, Java, Shockwave or Animated GIF. Entry forms are available from the .tv Web site. Besides the competition, the site is also offering information on Web animation - including tutorials, downloads, plug-ins and a forum.

The channel will also show a series on Web animation every Tuesday evening at 6.20pm for the next two weeks. Entries close on November 28, and judging commences the following day. Judges include Julie Connors (Macromedia), Tom Roope (co-director of Tomato Interactive), Blue Source and .tv's presenters Richard Topping and Hari Kunzru.

Winners will be announced on December 6, and their work showcased on .tv's arts programme, The Lounge.
