The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved two new sponsored Internet domains, .post and .travel, specifically for the post and travel industries.

ICANN conducts an independent review process with three panels of experts to measure the applications against set criteria including: technical competence; business and financial sufficiency; and whether the TLD (top-level domain) belongs to a sponsored community.

The organisation is considering eight other proposals. These include: .asia, .jobs, .eu for the European Union, and .xxx.

According to IT Vibe, there are over 200 domain names available, normally these are country specific but new TLD endings added in 2000 included .biz and .info.
