Microsoft plans to release Windows Media Player 9 for OS X, a note on the company's website claims.

The company's multimedia format is achieving widespread market acceptance. Most recently it emerged as format of choice for Europe's only existing a la carte download service; the proprietary software offers digital rights management features for copyright holders. Apple as yet has not added such features to its standards-based multimedia solution, QuickTime.

A brief note on Microsoft's website proclaims: "Coming Soon! Windows Media Player 9 Series for Mac OS X will deliver compatibility with 9 Series audio and video content."

No further details on this release have been announced. Windows Media format is not supported by Apple's market-leading iPod MP3 player, but is being adopted by some digital music device manufacturers.
