Iomega has announced a FireWire adaptor for its Zip 250MB USB drive at Comdex in Las Vegas.

The FireWire adaptor is expected to be available by the middle of 2000. The company is also investigating FireWire-enabled accessories for its other platforms for implementation during 2000.

The adaptor means the Zip 250MB USB can be connected to FireWire-equipped Macs and benefit from faster data-transfer rates. The drive will remain compatible with 100MB and 250MB Zip disks.

Iomega made its FireWire move because of FireWire’s growing popularity.

"Dialogue between Iomega and customers indicated a clear and growing need for FireWire connectivity," said David Henry, Iomega’s vice president of magnetic products.
