For a long time it has been clear that a new model of Apple TV is under development. Now references to "120 Hz" have been discovered in the latest beta version of tvOS 14.5, suggesting that an Apple TV upgrade is coming soon.
9to5Mac looked at the latest Apple tvOS beta and discovered multiple references to '120Hz' and 'supports120Hz' in the PineBoard - PineBoard is the system that controls the Apple TV interface. The equivalent on the iPhone and iPad is called SpringBoard. 120Hz is also rumoured for the iPhone 13.
Until now all Apple TV units have only supported 60Hz and this will not change as they lack the necessary hardware to support the standard. The current Apple TV ships with HDMI 2.0, while 120Hz needs HDMI 2.1. Users will also require a 120Hz TV set to take advantage of the technology.
Those who have the necessary equipment will be able to enjoy more demanding games and a smoother interface.
