join.me for iPad full review
join.me from LogMeIn is screen-sharing software, which makes light work of collaboration, aiding business, creativity, tutoring and much more. Its big selling point has been its ease of use, with a few simple clicks and a unique meeting code, you can be up and running via a small software download in minutes. join.me lets users, "sharers" and "joiners," chat over VoIP, share both screens and documents and have remote control access to computers. Available to both Mac and PC users, that cross-platform capability extends to Apple and Google, with dedicated apps for iOS and Android OS mobile devices. It makes the ability to hold meetings and the like, anywhere and with anyone, a reality.
The iOS app has been around for some time, benefiting from a range of enhancements and bug fixes with each update. Most recently, LogMeIn announced the ability to start and host meetings directly from your iPad by simply clicking the new share option. As with the desktop version, users can select and share documents, a Mail attachment for example, with anyone invited to join the meeting. The makers insist the addition is a "significant new update," which at last frees users, well sharers, from having to be close to a desktop or laptop computer.
join.me offers a two tier service - free and paid - which in the month of December costs £59 plus VAT for a year, a saving of £40, or alternatively £12 per month. LogMeIn provides a good comparison listing of what's available to each, and they differ significantly. Unfortunately, the ability to present from iPad is only available to join.me pro users, something we feel will limit the appeal of what is an excellent update. It’s worth noting that a free 14-day trial of the full service is also on offer without the need to hand over your credit card details. Also, using join.me on iPhone or iPod touch, with a smaller screen, is more fiddly and less impressive, especially when sharing documents, although you can of course pinch to zoom in and out of the shared screen.
