Yours, Vincent for iPhone review
From the team that brought Love Art: National Gallery, London to the iTunes App Store comes another application clearly aimed at art lovers. Yours, Vincent: The Letters of Vincent Van Gogh is the first application created for the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. It's a good start, a mix of text, images, audio and video, which while a little light on content is a great primer on the life and work of the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter.
The application uses Vincent van Gogh's letters to explore his life and times, culled from an impressive 15 years of research from the Van Gogh Museum and the Huygens Institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Listening to his thoughts can be a moving experience, which should inspire users to seek out the complete correspondence finally published in 2009 and also available online. Insight also comes from some brief but informative video interviews with the museum's letters experts.
The artwork selected for Yours, Vincent is a mix of Vincent van Gogh's 'Greatest Hits' and lesser known work, including some wonderful early sketches. Despite the ability to pinch to zoom on images, the iPhone's diminutive dimensions means viewers are missing the whole picture. That said, it's great to have such an impressive collection of exceptional images in the palm of your hand.
Yours, Vincent for iPhone and iPod touch is another quality application to wave in the face of those doubters who believe the iTunes App Store is a depository for novelty junk and fart gags. A good mix of visual and audio treats then, the fact that it's free is also worth applauding.
