Sky Sports Live Football Score Centre full review
When Macworld reviewed Sky News for iPhone back in June we suggested it would be great to see a similar free application from Sky offering sports coverage. Sky Sports Football Score Centre isn't quite it but for football fans it’s an excellent start. For good or bad, Sky dominates football coverage in the UK, and Sky Sports News in particular has built a solid reputation for keeping fans in touch with the game.
Jeff Stelling, Channel 4's Countdown presenter and legendary host of Sky's Gillette Soccer Saturday is central to this latest official Sky application. His smiling face can be seen on every page, and while it may seem like an endless plug to upgrade to Sky Sports premium channels, Football Score Centre is much more than just an ad for satellite TV.
With the Premiership about to kick off for another season, and the World Cup just around the corner, Football Score Centre offers comprehensive listings, including fixtures, lives scores and results. Sky places the emphasis on live with this application, offering live scores, text commentary, football tables, match stats, photos, team line-ups and formations. The latest news is also promised, along with virtual Vid-printer, which runs along the bottom of your screen.
To create some order out of the array of information on display a neat 'My Scores' function adds the ability to view selective fixtures in one place by clicking the '+' icons next to the fixtures your interested in. By default, Football Score Centre lists that day’s action, although you can browse fixtures across the next seven days. Fixtures are listed under leagues and include European games – many of which are now shown on either Sky Sports or ESPN in the UK.
Football Score Centre is lacking the push notification functions introduced with the iPhone 3.0 Software Update, which could allow users to receive alerts when a particular game’s goals are scored – a potentially excellent addition. The application also lacks live audio commentary, video highlights and the ability to stream Sky Sports News.
